The New Forest in June:

The stallions will be out on the forest between May 11th and June 22nd. Sometimes this leads to more excitable behaviour amongst the ponies. It’s still safe to walk on the forest but keep a sensible distance away from the ponies. Also be aware that the ponies may cross the road at a faster pace.

You will also see the foals in May and June. Sometimes they can be lying asleep in the middle of the road whilst the mare is grazing on the verge!

The bluebells are fading but there is a splash of colour on the forest from the foxgloves growing alongside paths, also the wild rhodedendrons. Neither of which are supposed to be growing here! It is particularly impressive if you drive along the Ornamental Drive at this time of year.

You might also see cotton grass and some delicate orchids growing in some boggy areas.

Trees are left where they fall now in the forest as this adds to the biodiversity of the forest. They make great climbing structures and are good for a picnic spot when you are out cycling or walking. One of my favourite trees is close to Linford Bottom- definitely dead but some fabulous patterns on the bark. You can’t help but wonder how old it is!
